Q11007
Hi,
Do you know of a page reference in the bristol ATPL course which will help me get some degree of understanding of the question below Q11007 Given: ; value for the ellipticity of the Earth is 1/297. ; Earth''s semimajor axis, as measured at the equator, equals 6378.4 km. ; What is the semiminor axis (km) of the earth at the axis of the Poles? Thanks

The Calculation
Chris
Cant remember where it is exactly, but what you have to do is divide the 6378 .4 by the 297, which gives 21.47, then subtract 21.47 from 6378.4, which gives 6356 etc, which is correct answer, its in the Gen Nav section at the front i think. Hope that helps Dougy

Perhaps you should add a more precise explanation in the database for this question?
(ab) / a = 1 / 297 => (ab) = a / 297 => b = a  a/297 => b = a(1  1/297) Where (a) is the major and (b) the minor semiaxis.
