  • Question id N991716

    Hi all,

    Can someone please walk me through the solution to this question?!

    For a planned flight the calculated fuel is as follows:
    *
    Flight Time: 3 h 06 min
    Reserve Fuel, at any time, should not be less than 30% of the remaining trip fuel
    Taxy Fuel: 8 kg
    Block Fuel: 118 kg
    *
    How much fuel should remain after 2 hours Flight Time?

    Stuck!

    Thanks in advance

    This is a terrible question - it is in the databank, but I really hope it will not appear in an Exam, and to be fair, I have not heard of this making an appearance for a long time, but it is in the QB!!

    Just treat this as a maths exercise ... the statement 'Reserve Fuel, at any time, should not be less than 30% of the remaining trip fuel' is rubbish ... so when you get to your destination, trip fuel all gone, reserve 30% of 0 ?? That is rubbish!!

    SO, maths exercise ... just deal with it!!

    At T/O, 110 kg = TRIP + RESERVE (30% x TRIP)

    So,
    110 = TRIP x (130/100) ...
    TRIP = 110 x (100/130) = 85 kg

    After 2 hrs, 1.1 hr remains,
    TRIP FUEL REMAINING = 85 x (1.1 / 3.1) = 30 kg

    RESERVE required = 30% x 30 = 9 kg

    We look at this on the brushup course - but please do not get wound up by it ... I don't think it will appear!!

      Hi Tom

      Thanks for the solution, I did go through the explanation after the progress test but still the answer escaped me

      Or maybe I can't use a calculator properly

      Thanks again

        That's definitely good to read... has anything changed in the last few years?

        We've already held back 25kg at the start, naming it "RESERVE". I can't get my head around why that would be ignored in the answer? It asks what "should remain", not what is "required". Rereading with a clearer head this morning I guess I should just accept the dodgy wording.
