    Q3082 - resurrected! - where's the catch??

Q3080 true course 300?, drift 8?R, variation 10?W, deviation -4?. Calculate the compass heading.
    (a) 306?
    (b) 322?
    (c) 294?
    (d) 278?

    Calculation: True course: 300?T + Variation: 10?W = 310?M - Deviation: 4? = Compass Heading: 306?

    Correct

Q3081 true track 352?, variation 11?W, deviation -5?, drift drift 10?R. Calculate the compass heading.
    (a) 358?
    (b) 025?
    (c) 346?
    (d) 018?

    Calculation: True course: 352?T + Variation: 11?W = 3?M - Deviation: 5? = Compass Heading: 358?

    Correct

Q3082 true track 070?, variation 30?W, deviation +1?, drift drift 10?R. Calculate the compass heading.
    (a) 089?
    (b) 101?
    (c) 100?
    (d) 091?

    Calculation: True course: 070?T + Variation: 30?W = 100?M + Deviation: 1? = Compass Heading: 101?

    Wrong! (...answer stated as 089??)

    Ideas anyone???

      C - - D - - M - - V - - T
      89 - +1 - 90 - 30W - 70

The 10 degree drift has to be taken into account

Remember drift goes from heading to track so 10 degrees starboard drift would make heading 100 so going the other way it has to be subtracted, same as the deviation, even though it s +1 when you move right to left it must be subtracted, hope that makes sense.

So why hasn't drift been factored into the previous two questions (which were correct according to the QB)???

I don't have the question bank anymore but have a look at the questions again and see if they ask for true course or true track

Cheers McGoo - sorted I think.

Drift WAS factored in after all.

Track and course seem to get treated the same on the QB (not sure I've ever differentiated between the two), but is different to Heading (ie after drift or WCA has been factored in). If I look at my VFR flight log, I've got three 'directions' - True Track, True Heading and Magnetic Heading, and that's enough for me. Anything else (eg, course, track-made-good, etc) just seems superfluous to me and is cluttering up much needed brain space.

A useful exercise on two counts:

            (1) I've realised after all this time that I've been treating Variation and Deviation the same, ie adding West and subtracting East for both. Probably doesn't help that we fly magnetic, not compass, headings.

            (2) by some spooky coincidence you can ignore drift in these sorts of calculations, get deviation the wrong way round, and STILL get the answer right - the first two Qs above prove it!!!

Thanks again for your input mate

              Greetings!

Actually the signs doesnt matter. It matters only for the direction. East + and West -
So whenever there's deviation (- sign given) take it as West but dont really subtract, same for East which is +.
You can just add and subtract based on these terms given below:

              Variation East - Magnetic Least

              Variation West - Magnetic Best

              Deviation East - Compass Least

              Deviation West - Compass Best

Also please check out the link.Hope that helps you😀

                Greetings,
Someone please help me with this Question.
What is the Compass heading if true track is 358 drift is 17 Left , variation is 27 E and deviation is 19 W?
                a) 009
                b) 001
                c) 359
                d) 347

                Answer: 001 (b)
                But when i do it,
                Track (T) 358
                Drift. 17 P
                Hdg = 015
                T. V. M. D. C
                015. 27E. 12. 19W. 031
                So I got 031 ....😢
                Please do Help...
