  • Calculating Glide Distance

An aircraft with L/D ratio of 20:1 is gliding at Vmd. What ground distance in NM will be covered in 5000ft of descent in still air conditions?

This is a question from the BGS software in the "Descend and Landing" chapter, page 3/23.

    The answer is 16.45nm.

I am trying to understand the logic behind it? CD/CL is 1/20. Why do you multiply by 20 x 5000ft to get the answer? I'm trying to draw a triangle to get the logic of it, but not succeeding. Any help appreciated
